Treatment Strategies for Relapse Prevention

Substance use disorders are often referred to as chronic diseases that involve multiple episodes of remission and relapse. Like other chronic conditions such as diabetes, hypertension, and asthma, relapse rates associated with substance use and addictive disorders are extremely high (National Institute on Drug Abuse, 2018). As with other chronic conditions, relapse to substance use disorders is most effectively treated through a combination of pharmacological and behavioral interventions. Relapse prevention strategies are a fundamental aspect for the successful treatment of substance use disorders, whether the treatment modality is inpatient, outpatient, short-term, or long-term in nature. Developing and implementing an effective relapse prevention plan with your clients will be a key to their successful ongoing recovery. The purpose of this course is to introduce you to theories of relapse and the empirically validated and evidence-based strategies for the prevention of relapse. You will receive a brief primer on addiction to inform your knowledge of relapse. Next, you will learn about concepts associated with relapse and factors that contribute to the risk of relapse. Finally, you will discover strategies for preventing relapse. This course is appropriate for professionals who work with individuals who are attempting to recover or are in recovery from a substance use disorder. The course content is geared toward individuals with a foundational knowledge of substance use disorders. It is recommended that you review the diagnostic criteria for substance use disorders found in the DSM-5™.
